The Beacon Equity Trust,  an educational charity, founded in 2009, whose principal activity is to support the operation of The Beacon Scholarship. It is privately funded and presently operates in the UK and East Africa.

With an aim that eventually a beacon scholar will make a real difference to their country’s development by attaining a significant leadership position, from which they can positively impact the lives of many others. we aim for a multiplier effect: rather than investing in educating thousands, we educate a handful of exceptional young people with real leadership potential who will, in turn, influence thousands through their actions.”

To apply, you’ll need:

 1. Academic Performance

Reports from the applicant's school are required as well as a personal recommendation from the Head. As a general guide, grades should be in the top decile of performance in an applicant's age or peer group.

2. Achievement in Sport, Music or Drama

An applicant must demonstrate that they are more than just an active participant in sport, music or drama, with some formal level of proficiency or accreditation.

3. Social Influence and Communication

The applicant must have held a position of responsibility in their school, or failing that provide some evidence of confidence amongst peers. They will be expected to undergo an interview which will give an indication of their aptitude and personality traits, and to participate in practical assessment exercises to establish their ability to form and develop relationships among peers.

4. Citizenship

An applicant must show through examples that they have helped those less fortunate than themselves, or have done work in the community, and are seen as role models. Unselfishness, kindness and concern for others are key criteria for The Beacon Scholarship and Scholars will be required to show continuing evidence of their efforts in these areas.

5. Other Factors

In addition to the above, other factors to be taken into account include:

  • Integration potential (which necessarily involves consideration of the applicant's competence in English).
  • The likely contribution of the applicant to other areas of school life.
  • Age - to be considered for the Beacon Scholarship for Schools is 18-21 years.
  • The applicant must be a Kenyan, Tanzanian or Ugandan National, i.e. have Kenyan, Tanzanian or Ugandan citizenship.
  • Applicants will also need to demonstrate, with examples, that they are a 'change-maker':

  1. They have the capacity to 'take people with them' and
  2. They are already making a difference now.


 FINANCIAL NEED - DISCLOSURE REQUIREMENTS
  • To qualify for a Beacon Scholarship as child , Parents/Guardians/Sponsors must Demonstrate financial need and undertake fill and complete financial disclosure.
  • Commitment by Parents/Guardians/Sponsors both financially and educationally for their child to complete their bachelor degree as a Beacon Scholar. 
  • The Beacon Scholarship is aimed at Parents/Guardians/Sponsors who can demonstrate financial need but are able to fund at least one third of the tuition fees for a Beacon Scholar.


KIND NOTE:It is unlikely that Parents/Guardians/Sponsors with an annual gross household income above US$100k will qualify.

  • A confidential Financial Disclosure form (see below) will be required to be completed by Parents/Guardians/Sponsors  once their application has been reviewed. 
  • The Financial Disclosure form must be accompanied by electronic scans, in pdf or jpeg format, of the following documents and sent by email to The Beacon Equity Trust:


  1. The most recent 6 months' payslips for each Parent/Guardian/Sponsor;
  2. Letter from each Parent/Guardian/Sponsor's employer verifying their annual income;
  3. Tax returns for the last 2 years for each Parent/Guardian/Sponsor;
  4. If self-employed, financial statements verified by an accountant.

KIND NOTE: Incomplete filled Financial Disclosure form or failure to submit the above-mentioned documents may lead to the instant disqualification of the applicant.

On receipt of the Financial Disclosure form and accompanying documents The Beacon Equity Trust will review the suitability of the application. Supplementary information may then be requested.

In addition Parents/Guardians/Sponsors will be required to:

  • Complete a Financial Disclosure form whenever required by The Beacon Equity Trust.
  • Disclose any material change in financial circumstances to the Beacon School and The Beacon Equity Trust. Should financial circumstances improve, there may be some re-negotiation of the proportion of fees paid by Parents/Guardians/Sponsors.
  • Give one full term's notice to both the Beacon School and The Beacon Equity Trust should Parents/Guardians/Sponsors change their minds about their child continuing as a Beacon Scholar.
  • The award of a Beacon Scholarship is for up to one-third of tuition fees only (including boarding where applicable). 
  • Parents/Guardians/Sponsors are expected to cover additional costs such as the payment of any school deposits and levies, school clothes, transport and extras such as school excursions and extra-curricular activities (eg music lessons).

Application Procedure

How to Apply

NOTE: Candidates are strongly advised to click here for availability of Beacon Scholarship places at Beacon Partner Schools before 

  • It's important all candidates go through application procedure/requirements and review before applying for scholarship.
  • You can apply for a Beacon Scholarships using the online application form.
  • Candidate registers on The Beacon Scholarship website and downloads a Nomination Form, to be completed asap by Head of candidate's current school;
  • BET advises candidate whether, in principle, it will support the application;
  • Candidate meanwhile completes UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) application, plus any funding application required by a university offering The Beacon Scholarship;
  • University interview, if required (November/December);
  • University makes an offer of admission to the candidate (January/February);
  • BET invites candidate to complete full Beacon Scholarship Application Form and Financial Disclosure (January - February);
  • Candidate is invited for interview and assessment by BET (March/April);
  • BET and Beacon Partner University jointly decide whether or not a Beacon Scholarship is to be awarded (April);
  • An Award Letter is sent by BET to the successful candidate (April/May);
  • Candidate and their parents accept the award and its Terms and Conditions by completing the Award Acceptance Form (May);
  • A UK visa is obtained by the successful candidate (July/August); 
  • A UK Mentor is assigned to the Beacon Scholar (September/October).
